Join A Wider Bridge, The Consulate General of Israel to the Pacific Northwest, and The East Bay International Jewish Film Festival, for a viewing of the trailblazing Israeli documentary “We Were the Others” and for a panel conversation with the movie director, Hadas Ayalon on the stories of the heroes that pioneered the LGBTQ Israeli community and on the work that is done to preserve the history and to fight for the generation that fought for our rights.
For many, Israel is an LGBTQ oasis in the middle east with the world-renowned TLV Pride, and with the ongoing advancement of LGBTQ rights. However, the long struggle for LGBTQ equality was led by heroes that pioneered the LGBTQ Israeli community.
About the FIlm:
We Were the Others follows the story of six gay men who were born in the early days of the State of Israel. Their stories serve as the film’s backdrop for the portrayal of the clandestine, undocumented lives of homosexuals in Israel in the 1960s and ‘70s – from a time when their sexual identity was rendered illegal and a mental illness through to 1979, when a few brave gay men dared to go public and protest for their rights, thus marking the first documented chapter in the chronicled history of Israel’s gay community.
A Wider Bridge is excited to honor this trailblazing generation as part of A Wider Lens. A WIDER LENS is a series of events looking into the Israeli LGBTQ community, diverse society, and rich culture through A Wider Lens of experiences, including trailblazing Israeli documentaries, culinary workshops led by Israeli Chefs, and meaningful conversations with local heroes and activists.
