Description

A panel discussion with the League of Women Voters, NAACP, and the Self Advocacy Association of NYS, moderated by Judge Lenora Foote-Beavers, past chair of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, WNY Chapter Diversity Committee. We will look at the past, present, and future barriers and solutions to full citizenship from the view of the fight for enfranchisement for women, African Americans, and people with disabilities in the United States. The event will be Closed Captioned. ASL interpretation is available upon request.

She serves as their in-house lobbyist, policy advisor, and communications representative. Since joining the League in 2015, she’s helped advocate for the passage of progressive voting reforms including early voting, primary consolidation, pre-registration for 16- and 17-year old’s, and voter registration modernization. Before coming to the League Jennifer served as Deputy Regional Director for the Albany office of Senator Charles Schumer. BJ Stasio (President @Self Advocacy Association of New York State) BJ Stasio is the President of the Board of Directors of the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State (SANYS), a position to which he was elected by his fellow self-advocates and peers around New York. He has also been employed by OPWDD for over 20 years, working on person-centered planning, voting issues, and self-determination training and education. Additionally, he has served on the board of the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York, the Disability History Museum Board, and has a non-profit organization, Buffalo Racin', focused on getting people with disabilities involved in 5K races. BJ has been actively involved with direct advocacy to OPWDD during this public health crisis on behalf of SANYS, representing the voices of self-advocates across New York State. L. Nathan Hare (CEO @Community Action Organization of WNY) L. Nathan Hare, a lifelong Buffalo resident of the City of who has been involved in some aspect of youth employment, youth training and education, foster care, or juvenile justice for more than 45 years. His distinguished career includes serving as the Director of the ECC Office of Special Programs, Deputy Commissioner of the Erie County Department of Youth Services, Commissioner of Erie County Youth Services, Western Region Director of the Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth, and now, the President and CEO of the Community Action Organization of Erie County, Inc. Nathan is a noted scholar and teacher of both Christian education and classical African history and culture, and hosts of three area radio programs, including “Think Again” on WWKB 1520AM, “Living Now” on WUFO 1080AM, and “The World of Community Action” on WBLK 93.7FM.
