Pope Francis’ new encyclical, “Fratelli Tutti,” does something that some Catholics believed could not be done: It ratifies a change in church teaching. In this case, on the death penalty.

This discussion will consider that each individual in the criminal justice system deserves to be seen, heard, and treated with inherent worth and dignity, and worthy of an appropriate and compassionate response.

The Life and Dignity of the Human Person is one of the themes of Catholic Social Teaching. Our Call to Family, Community, and Participation, with particular concern for the common good, is another.

He serves on the governing board of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and graduated from Georgetown Law School. He is an ecumenical Christian as a life-long Catholic active in daily liturgy at St. Francis Xavier parish and in recent years has been active as a leader in the Faith Lutheran church community in Phoenix where he leads the social justice ministry with a focus on criminal sentencing reform and ending the death penalty. Dale A. Baich (Supervisor, Capital Habeas Unit in the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Arizona @Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Arizona, Capital Habeas Unit) Dale A. Baich is the supervising attorney of the Capital Habeas Unit at the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Arizona. Dale represents numerous persons across the country who are under a sentence of death, and appears on behalf of his clients in federal and state courts. He has represented clients in challenges to lethal injection practices in numerous jurisdictions. Dale is an adjunct professor of law at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, where he teaches a course on the death penalty. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona and he serves as the Board President.
