“Transkids”, A film By Hilla Medalia, and a conversation about the journey for acceptance of transgender youth, by their families and society.
Join A Wider Bridge, The Consulate General of Israel to the Pacific Northwest, and The East Bay International Jewish Film Festival, for a viewing of the trailblazing honest, and emotional Israeli documentary telling the stories of four Israeli teenagers undergoing the process of life-and-identity-saving gender transformation, and for a panel conversation on the personal and social effects of youth gender reassignment in present-day Israel, and on how families learn to accept and navigate this complex and delicate process of gender transitioning. With Hilla Medalia, the Director of the film, Noam Kaniel, and Ofri Shemesh, two of the teenagers featured in the film.

About the FIlm:
‘Transkids’ follows the stories of four Israeli teenagers and their families. Noam, 16, was born as a girl to a religious family in a settlement in Samariah and studied at an all-girl religious school; Ofri, 16, always was the cool girl who played soccer with the boys, but inside he always knew he was a boy. Romy, 16, was born as a boy to a secular family but as soon as she started playing with dolls, her parents signed her up to a religious school. Liron, 17, grew up hiding behind different costumes, including a phase of heavy makeup, and shiny dresses before he was ready to face his true self. ‘Transkids’ is the result of four years of intimate and deep documentation and sheds a light on the personal and social effects of youth gender reassignment in present-day Israel, where army service and religion play a very strong role in people's identity.
