Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. Basically, SEL lays the groundwork for our kids to develop healthy relationships, have a better sense of how their behaviors influence others and generally learn how to be successful people.
It is imperative that educators understand the value and power SEL has to build critical life skills from the start. By integrating SEL into the everyday academic curriculum and into the fabric of the school culture, schools can create a positive school climate, establish healthier relationships among students and staff, provide tools and coping skills students need throughout life, make connections between life skills and careers, create safer environments and teach students their responsibility to one another and to the community.
This PD workshop will detail important data and research behind SEL, how the school setting has become the main source for students to gain these foundations and how a fully integrated SEL environment can positively impact academic achievement, student engagement and future student success. Practical tips and strategies will be shared allowing participants to understand how to create a fully integrated SEL culture in their schools. Educators will leave with easy, ready to use tips to start integrating into their daily classroom lessons and activities, whether that is in person or through virtual education.
