Advanced FLSA: Firefighter Work Schedules for the 21st Century March 19, 2025
Date & Time
Selected Sessions:
Mar 19, 2025 01:00 PM
Description
Firefighters work a wide variety of schedules. Most firefighters work shifts vary between 24 & 48 hours in length. Yet not all firefighters work the same number of hours each week or receive the same amount of overtime for scheduled work shifts. Why is that? The unique combination of a firefighter’s work schedule, the fire department’s adopted work period, and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) all impact a firefighter’s overtime eligibility for both scheduled and unscheduled work shifts.
What are the best firefighter work schedule - work period combinations? What combinations result in higher amounts of overtime for scheduled work shifts? What combinations result in less overtime for scheduled work shifts? What are industry “best practices” for changing a firefighter’s work schedule, incorporating Kelly Days, and minimizing FLSA overtime for scheduled work shifts?
This program will examine all of these topics and leave attendees with the knowledge necessary to navigate the complex world of “Firefighter Work Schedules for the 21st Century.”
