Money, money, money – Beyond philanthropy: What is the role of public dollars?
Every year, disasters and humanitarian crises affect millions of people globally. Millions of philanthropic dollars are distributed to the thousands of organizations across the charitable sector in the U.S. and other countries in response to these emergencies. This funding is dwarfed by the billions of dollars invested by governments worldwide.

To help understand where funding comes from and how the dollars are used, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) and Candid produce the annual Measuring the State of Disaster Philanthropy report. This report also examines how much funding addresses long-term recovery, preparedness and disaster risk reduction, in addition to immediate relief.

On Nov. 18, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) and Candid will host a webinar to highlight findings from the 2021 Measuring the State of Disaster Philanthropy report. The report is an annual publication by CDP and Candid that examines how much funding addresses long-term disaster recovery, preparedness and risk reduction as well as immediate relief.

Speakers will share insights into the philanthropic and governmental response to disasters that occurred in 2019, including Hurricane Dorian, Cyclone Idai and wildfires in Australia and California. They will examine how private dollars are differentiated from public dollars domestically and globally, and what funders can do to supplement the restrictions public dollars often have.

While aimed at funders, this webinar may also be helpful for community organizations, government staff and political and faith leaders looking to understand the scope and scale of disaster funding.

Automatic closed captioning will be available via Zoom during the webinar. The webinar will be recorded and the link to the fully captioned recording will be emailed to everyone who registered.
