Garden City and Levittown are two famous landmarks in the history of suburban America. Located just a few miles apart on what was once the Hempstead Plains, the two communities were founded in different centuries, under different circumstances, and for different reasons. Despite their differences in origin and subsequent development, the two communities share some underlying similarities. This presentation will explore some of those similarities and differences, and in the process examine some interesting aspects of the American and Long Island suburban experience.
