Supporting the Mental Health Needs of LGBTQIA+ and Gender Expansive Youth

Description

Kids’ Mental Health Pierce County is a group of agencies and professionals dedicated to improving child and adolescent mental health treatment and prevention in Pierce County.

This presentation will provide participants with detailed examples and ways for individuals who work with gender diverse youth to support their mental health and needs through a trauma informed and culturally responsive lens. This session will review unique experiences that the gender diverse youth encounter through the intersectionality of systems they are a part of.

This session will be highlighting the intricate experiences of gender dysphoria and how this mental health struggle manifests through youth behavior. The impact of gender dysphoria on the brain, body, and behavior will be analyzed. Participants will understand specific ways to support LGBTQIA+ youth in navigating the cisgender and heteronormative systems within our society.

Tovah served as a special education teacher in Seattle Public Schools, a behavior specialist and curriculum developer in Las Vegas, and a district behavior specialist and PBIS Coach for Federal Way Public Schools, the most diverse school district in Washington state. Tovah found her passion developing relationships, building wraparound supports, and educating youth with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities (EBD) within a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework. From her experiences in the classroom and developing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum in a variety of school districts, Tovah focused on changing and growing school climate and culture to aid in the support for all students and staff, through Positive Behavior Interventions and Systems (PBIS).
