Aligning your anchor mission for post-pandemic impact: How Kaiser Permanente is leveraging its assets to rebuild local economies, address social needs, and advance racial equity
The COVID-19 crisis and nationwide uprisings against police violence have magnified the connection between systemic racism, social and economic inequities and poor health outcomes. How can anchor institutions meet this moment to address the physical, economic, and social impacts of the pandemic and begin to repair the harm caused by systemic racism in communities?

John Vu, vice president of strategy for community health at Kaiser Permanente, Racheal Meiers, lead for economic opportunity and impact investing, and Anand Shah, MD, vice president of social health, will share how the following initiatives were developed and how they are being implemented. They will also share insights into how Kaiser Permanente’s organizational culture and anchor mission strategy enabled the rapid build-out of these programs during periods of crisis.

1) A $60M joint investment with LISC and a commitment to direct $40M in grants to support businesses led by Black and other underrepresented groups and for community-based organizations focused on dismantling discriminatory institutional practices

2) A Social Health Strategy and Playbook, a set of programs and protocols for addressing patients’ housing security, food security, financial stability, transportation needs, and social isolation
