Series description: Independent Green candidate for U.S. Senate Lisa Savage is convening a series of policy-focused webinars this summer, “The Way Forward,” that bring together policy and subject-matter experts from Maine and around the country to have substantive discussions about solving some of our country’s most difficult policy issues, with opportunity for questions and discussion.
Part 5: Challenges to Ranked Choice Voting in Maine for statewide elections have been defied by the people. Proponents of RCV say it has the potential to not only unseat Collins, but to change politics as we know it in this country; by allowing people to vote their conscience, not their fears. It has already been used to unseat 2nd District incumbent Bruce Poliquin with Jared Golden. Progressives believe it will empower non-corporate candidates and issues-based campaigns. And it's nothing new; RCV has been used since 2007 in Ireland, and for a century in Australia.
Hear panelists Chris Cayer, Field Organizer for the 2016 RCV referendum and the Statewide Field Director for the 2018 People's Veto; Liz Popolo, who has been working to expand RCV to the Bay State; and Bre Kidman, previous Democratic hopeful for U.S. Senate, who recently endorsed independent Green candidate Lisa Savage’s bid for that same office; in conversation with U.S. Senate candidate Lisa Savage about the health of our democracy, Ranked Choice Voting, and why it matters.
