We know that, due to COVID-19, the discussions that campus communities are having about civic engagement this year may look substantially different than they have in years past. Understanding that this is a unique time, the +1 the Polls team has spent the last month listening to you - students, administrators, and voter access organizations that focus on student voting access - to hear what role this campaign can continue to play in helping lift the voices of students everywhere and give them easier access to the ballot box.
Through a number of focus groups, we heard that the protection of existing voting sites on campuses will remain a high priority to ensure that election officials do not close or relocate these critical access points to our democracy. We also heard that there is optimism about the possibility of placing new voting sites on additional campuses as well. States and communities are still considering ways to ensure a free, safe, fair, and accessible election in November, and campuses are ideal locations for voting sites that need to be moved out of nursing homes and smaller community venues to ensure voter safety.
But in order to ensure your campus is ready to host a polling place this November, we need your help. Please consider applying to become a Poll Defender and work with us through the Summer and Election Day to bring safe, easy access to the polls to your community.
