Virtual Brown Bag Lunch: Diamondback Rattlesnakes and Longleaf Pine Savannahs
Dr. Jennifer Fill completed her doctoral research at the University of South Carolina Columbia, where she studied the ecology and restoration of fire-maintained longleaf pine ecosystems. Loss of pine savannas in the southeastern US has endangered numerous plant and animal species such as the eastern diamondback rattlesnake. An indigenous predator in longleaf ecosystems, the eastern diamondback has suffered drastic population reductions throughout its range and has been petitioned for listing under the Endangered Species Act. Jennifer's research investigated aspects of eastern diamondback ecology and habitat use that are crucial for informing efforts to conserve this species.
