A Snapshot of DRDC Space Situational Awareness Research and Development
Did you ever wonder what those odd little points of light are moving against the starry backdrop of the clear night sky? Earth orbit is heavily populated with a growing number of active satellites and space debris. Recognizing the defence and security risks that this population poses, the Canadian Armed Forces has taken an active role tracking space objects to help reduce the risk of collision and maintain safe space operations. This field of practice, called Space Situational Awareness (SSA) , forms a recognized and growing role for Canadian defensive space operations as directed in Canada’s Strong, Secure, Engaged defence policy. DRDC Ottawa’s Lauchie Scott will give an overview brief of some recent work in Space Situational Awareness R&D and give a snapshot of some of current and upcoming technical challenges.
