Surgery in Eloquent Areas

Description

This presentation will take the attendees through commonly used techniques to allow safe and straightforward surgery for intrinsic brain tumours. It will summarise the options under both sedation and general anaesthesia but will focus on awake craniotomy using a simple technique and the experiences of the presenter.

The participiants will gain knowledge of indications, options, complications and pitfalls as well as more detail on the surgical technique, illustrated with cases. The talk will be aimed at neurosurgical trainees.

He has had a practice dedicated to neuro-oncology for a decade. He promoted the more widespread use of awake surgery for high-grade tumours as well as low grades, introduced day-case brain tumour surgery to the UK, pioneered biopsy techniques and was a strong advocate of sub-specialisation in delivering optimal patient outcomes. He has performed over 500 awake craniotomies for brain tumours. Mr Grundy is also the vice president (president elect) of BNOS and honorary secretary of SBNS and vice chair of the adult neurosciences CRG. At University Hospital Southampton he is now also the interim chief medical officer. Miss Kathrin Whitehouse (Locum Neurosurgery Consultant, University Hospital Wales, Cardiff. ) 2002 - 2008 MBBCh Cardiff University, Wales Foundation years South Wales, with BSc in Psychology in Medicine ST1 - 8 National Neurosurgery Training Southwest (Severn/Peninsula) Masters in Clinical Education Plymouth University 2015 and Fellow of Higher Education Academy RCS(Eng) Wessex Neuro-oncology Surgery Fellowship 2019 Currently co-ordinates the National Neurosurgery Finishing School for trainees, and is part of the SBNS/SAC workforce planning committee.
