David Holmes
Founder and Executive Director @The Character Collaborative
David was tenured Associate Professor and director of the center for teaching excellence at the University of Vermont, followed by a stint as coordinator of the $25 million grants program for innovation at the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education in the U.S. Department of Education. He served as VP of College for Every Student, a nonprofit he co-founded to help disadvantaged youth on a path to higher education, and then directed a center for youth with learning differences (Lee Pesky Learning Center). David was headmaster of Suffield Academy (CT), 1991-2004, and the Sun Valley Community School (ID, 2011-2016), schools with expansive programs to foster leadership and character development. He co-founded the Character Collaborative in 2016 and now serves as Executive Director. He writes and speaks widely on elevating character attributes in college admissions. Huy Trinh
Admissions Coordinator @Reed College
Huy was born in Vietnam but attended Boston College where he studied history and philosophy. Huy then worked at City Year Boston, as a teaching assistant before obtaining a Master's degree in International Relations. He then moved to Portland and now represents Reed College, as a member of the Colleges That Change Lives Consortium (CTCL). CTLC a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and support of a student-centered college search process. Member colleges support the goal of every student finding a college that develops a lifelong love of learning and provides the foundation for a successful and fulfilling life beyond college. Kalyan Balaven
Director of Teaching and Learning @The Athenian School
After practicing law for a brief time, during a particularly difficult case, Mr. Balaven realized his calling to education. During his tenure as an educator, Mr. Balaven has held numerous leadership roles, mostly during his 12-year career at The Athenian School. There he has served as a humanities instructor, the Dean of Equity and Inclusion, acting Head of School, and currently, Director of Teaching and Learning. Mr. Balaven is widely known for building innovative educational programs that reach students of all backgrounds, including Hip Hop based curriculum and enhanced LMS/remote learning methods. He founded the Inclusion Dashboard Consortium and www.inclusionsfactor.org, and is a nationally recognized thought leader, speaker and writer on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues.
