Topic
Beyond Survival: Eating & Living in Gaza
Description
"Gaza Kitchen" authors Laila El-Haddad and Maggie Schmitt alongside Palestinian-American farmer Mohammed Abujayyab will introduce and discuss three new short films depicting different aspects of the food system in besieged Gaza, in a conversation moderated by Nora Barrows-Friedman
Ten years ago Laila El-Haddad and Maggie Schmitt traveled the whole Gaza Strip to learn about and document the area's food system. They learned from home cooks and many others working in the food system their strategies not only for surviving but also for crafting dignity, joy and resistance in the farm, the home garden, the food-processing plant, and the kitchen. Today the need for these skills is more acute than ever.
(In late 2019, Laila returned to Gaza as part of a World Food Program delegation and was able to update her familiarity with the troubled situation there.)
Join our webinar to meet-- via short videos that have been specially pre-recorded for this event by Gaza's Al-Ain Media-- three skilled and courageous workers in the food system that underlines the fine cuisine that Maggie & Laila described in "The Gaza Kitchen". They are: Farmer Intisar al-Najjar, organic farmer Abdulmonim Ahmed, and tahina factory manager Abdulkarim Shakour.
