Juliana Vidal
PhD Candidate, Chemistry @Memorial University of Newfoundland
Juliana Vidal is a Ph.D. Candidate at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada, and under the supervision of Dr. Francesca Kerton and co-supervision of Dr. Stephanie MacQuarrie , she is investigating new applications for a sustainable material obtained from wood waste called biochar. She previously completed her B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. at Federal University of Juiz de Fora in Brazil. Today, Juliana is the Director of Marketing and Communications of the Network of Early-Career Sustainable Scientists and Engineers (NESSE), a member of the UNEP MGCY Chemicals and Waste Platform, and the Graduate Student Liaison of Beyond Benign, a non-profit organization dedicated to Green Chemistry Education. She was a member of the Governance Task Force of the CIC and has been selected a Chemical Abstracts Service Future Leader in the last year.
Bria Garcia
PhD Candidate, Chemistry @University of Delaware
Bria Garcia is a PhD Candidate in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Delaware Newark in the United States.She is a graduate student member of Dr. Mary P. Watson’s inorganic chemistry research group. Her graduate research focuses on deaminative cross couplings of alkylpyridinium salts with aryl halides Bria earned her B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. Bria is also a member of SACNAS – Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science – an inclusive organization dedicated to fostering the success of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans, from college students to professionals, in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in STEM. Bria’s hobbies include yoga, watching Grey’s Anatomy, and spending time with family and friends.
Cecilia García Marra
Chemical Engineer, Project Engineer @McCue Engineering Contractors
Cecilia has a Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina), and she is currently registered as a Professional Engineer in BC. She has over six years of experience in the water and wastewater treatment industry. Cecilia has worked with Veolia Water Technologies as a Laboratory Technician and Process Engineer. Later, she joined McCue as a Project Engineer where she contributes to the Engineering Team with process design, budget estimation, and project management. She also plans, oversees, and supports the laboratory work conducted at McCue, coordinates in-house training for McCue employees, and leads the development and implementation of the Training Indigenous People (TIPs) Program. Cecilia has volunteered for educational and engineering organizations; she is always looking for ways to contribute to promoting STEM careers.
Flavia Vasconcellos
Chemical Engineer, Cathodes, Copper and Fluorspar Specialist @Rio Tinto
Flavia is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 2004, she moved to Canada with her twin brother and mother, who was pursuing her PhD studies in biology. From a young age, Flavia developed an interest in mathematics, sciences and problem-solving. Her interests in these subjects led her towards a career in applied sciences. In 2015, she graduated from Polytechnique Montreal as a Chemical Process Engineer. Her professional career started with Siemens Canada, where she worked for two and half years in two different roles. In 2018, she was ready to make a career change and decided to pursue a new opportunity with Rio Tinto Canada as a Raw Materials Strategic Analyst. Flavia is still employed at Rio Tinto but now works as a Cathodes, Copper and Fluorspar Specialist. She manages these commodities for the organization’s Atlantic smelters (supplier negotiations, product quality claims, mid-long term buy strategy etc.)
