Juvenile Diversion: Keeping Kids Away from Court Builds Safer Communities

Keeping students away from juvenile courts is one of the best ways to keep our kids and communities safe. 

Diverting youth out of the formal court system is more effective than formal court processing in reducing recidivism and steering youth to success. As shown in our recent report, “Diversion: A Hidden Key to Combating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Juvenile Justice,” the earliest decision stages have among the most severe and consistent disparities in the juvenile court process. Increasing the use of diversion can sharply reduce those disparities.
