Protecting Half of Earth for All Life
The goal for global conservation is Half, inspired by E.O. Wilson’s call to protect half of our precious planet for the rest of nature. Although "America the Beautiful" campaign, the US implementation of 30 x 30, is a good start, it will not be enough to reverse the current extinction crisis and bring humanity into the safe zone. At this time, the US currently has about 15% of its land under formal protection for biodiversity, which matches the global percentage. Half-Earth's goal of 50% is not reachable in the US through state and federal action alone. Conservation by non-profits, NGOs, and individuals—including the forever-wild lands Northeast Wilderness Trust protects—is necessary. Our goal is to leave no species behind! Dennis will feature stories of charismatic creatures like hummingbirds and dragonflies, and discuss how protecting one species often benefits others. He’ll also talk about what each of us can do as individuals and as communities to support all of the miraculous species we love and need.
