Michigan’s iconic, historic lighthouses are being preserved and promoted by stewards and partners working at the local, state, and federal levels. The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) plays a critical role in these efforts through regulatory responsibilities, grant funding opportunities, and marketing. This webinar will provide a brief history of Michigan’s lighthouses and describe how the SHPO monitors work at lighthouse sites through historic preservation easements, section 106 reviews, and other programs. It will also provide an in-depth description of the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program (MLAP) grants funded through the sale of the Michigan Save Our Lights specialty license plate.
This webinar is supported in part by an award from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and a grant from the Michigan Preservation Fund of the Michigan Historic Preservation Network and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
