Future of B2B E-Commerce for Enterprises

The use of the Internet to facilitate commerce among companies promises vast benefits: dramatically reduced costs, greater access to buyers and sellers, improved marketplace liquidity, and a whole new array of efficient and flexible transaction methods. The B2B market is still in its infancy, and its structure and players remain in rapid flux. Despite breathless press coverage, very little is known about how business-to-business commerce will evolve on the Internet.

But, business is moving into an even more digital future. To prepare for this future, B2B marketers need to embrace technology and the surrounding skill set to push an increasingly online, increasingly sustainable marketplace. B2B sales are shifting towards an e-commerce focus. E-commerce trends for B2B moving into the future are highly influenced by the increasingly digital workspace, shaped by new technology and a reliance on data.

But after COVID-19, more than three-quarters of buyers and sellers say they now prefer digital self-serve and remote human engagement over face-to-face interactions—a sentiment that has steadily intensified even after lockdowns due to the pandemic have ended. Safety is one reason, of course. But self-serve and remote interactions have made it easier for buyers to get information, place orders, and arrange service, and customers have enjoyed that speed and convenience. Only about 20 percent of B2B buyers say they hope to return to in-person sales, even in sectors where field-sales models have traditionally dominated, such as pharma and medical products.
