This is Part 2 of a 2-Part Series.

Each of us was born with an opportunity unique to humans: to inhabit a 360-degree life, to experience our innate joy and compassion unconditionally. Yet, there are stages to our personal journey and, without the essential life skills to explore the terrain, many of us get lost in switchbacks of our own making.

Addiction is one of the most prevalent ways we get lost in these switchbacks on the mountain paths of life. We find ourselves making and breaking commitments to our recovery; repeating patterns that we now know are painful AND damaging; or going to numbing modes from where we don’t know how to get out.

Understanding and growing into our capacity to embody the essential life skills for this journey is empowering. Blessedly, these skills are not only relegated to the realm of recovery from addiction, anxiety or depression, but, in fact, they are the stepping stones for living an awakened, easeful, and vital life.

Yoga teaches us how to implement these life skills in the body using the map of Kriya yoga. Kriya yoga illustrates how we evolve through the stages of tapas, svadhyaya, and isvari-pranidhana with the forces of the gunas: tamas, rajas, and sattva. Through this we develop the faith, courage, and commitment required to create lasting change.
