Description
Internews’ Earth Journalism Network’s IDEA Talks are discussions on Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility, designed to support journalists to apply a Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) lens to their reporting. This webinar will focus on “just transition”, which addresses the need to ensure economic, social and environmental justice. A just transition creates economic opportunities by generating new jobs in renewable energy sectors like solar and wind, while transferring new skills and ensuring economic growth in regions reliant on fossil fuels. It also ensures that Indigenous land rights and the environment are protected while scaling up renewable energy capacity. Achieving a truly equitable transition requires a deep understanding of the diverse impacts decarbonization can have on vulnerable communities. That’s where journalists come in. Journalists play a pivotal role in informing the public about the complexities of this massive effort – and holding policymakers and the private sector accountable to their commitments to ensure a just transition. Join this discussion to dig into best practices for inclusive storytelling, and explore how to amplify the voices of Indigenous communities, women, youth and local workers impacted by decarbonization efforts – from those in the coal and gas industries to those now impacted by the mining of lithium, cobalt, and other rare earth minerals required for renewable technologies. By ensuring that all perspectives are highlighted in reporting on this issue, journalists’ coverage can help drive more ambitious climate action with greater public support – enabling environmental sustainability and social justice.
