Food Security for Children & Families Amidst the Pandemic: Using a Racial Equity Lens

Across the country before the COVID pandemic, families living with low incomes were at risk of food insecurity. Nationwide data show the demand for food assistance increased dramatically across the board, but especially so in historically marginalized communities that bore the brunt of the economic fallout caused by the pandemic. This likely reflects the ongoing impact of structural racism and xenophobia. Although federal relief programs have provided much-needed assistance, there is still much work to be done. Dr. Ettinger de Cuba will discuss what we know about food security among children and families living with low incomes, provide insights on the root causes of racial inequities, and present actions that we can take to support family flourishing, including food security, in this country.
