Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Church:
Creating an Environment of Respect

Every ministry staff member has a right to a harassment-free workplace.
In general, a workplace that tolerates inappropriate, abusive and demeaning conduct has MORE of it.
And a workplace that does NOT tolerate inappropriate, abusive and demeaning conduct has LESS of it.

Ministry supervisors play a key role in creating and maintaining a ministry’s climate of respect.

In this training, Kimberlee Norris, attorney and founder of MinistrySafe, discusses how to prevent and respond to sexual harassment, and how ministries can foster a workplace of respect. By law, ministry supervisors must take action if they see or receive a report of sexual harassment. As a ministry leader, you have responsibility to ensure that work occurs appropriately and in accord with workplace policies, including policy addressing sexual harassment.

In addition, Ms. Norris discusses TX Civil Practices and Remedies Code 81.001, which specifically addresses inappropriate sexual interaction characterized by an imbalance of power, with direct application to pastors and ministry counselors. This little known code section CRIMINALIZES inappropriate sexual interaction between clergy and congregant, and counselor and counselee: it’s not just a bad idea, it’s a CRIME.
