Let’s Talk ‘Common Sense’: Reclaiming Common Sense for a Livable Future
Date & Time
Selected Sessions:
Feb 27, 2025 01:00 PM
Description
With a federal election coming up, ‘common sense’ is a term we’ll be hearing a lot. But what do people actually mean when they say “It’s just common sense!”? How will that phrase be used? And how does it relate to climate change?
We’ve been told that the common sense way to solve problems is through the free-market — privatization, competition, and profit. But what if that way of thinking is part of what’s driving the climate crisis? What other possibilities make sense?
What would it mean to see the world through what we share, not just what we own. From public parks to clean water and air, from community projects to fair wages, what if we revived what’s valuable in the idea of the commons: the resources, spaces, and shared knowledge we all rely on.
What We’ll Explore:
• Can we agree on what common sense is?
• Is common sense holding us back from tackling the climate crisis?
• What models can we look to across history or in our own times for a more collaborative, less fragmented world?
• What role does education play in shaping common sense?
• What role do communications and new media, like podcasting, play in creating opportunities for sense making?
We’re also launching our new podcast Commons Sense: the Commons, Climate Change, and Public Conversation (co-created by Barbara Leckie and Joel Westheimer and produced by former CBC producer Mary Stinson). Commons Sense is a six-part series with accompanying curriculum bringing together humanities and social science research on common sense, communication, and the commons, featuring insights from experts from experts in a range of fields.
