Spotlighting the National Gallery of Canada’s Collection of Photographs
Ann Thomas, Senior Curator of Photographs will speak to the National Gallery of Canada’s collection of photographs, which celebrated its 50th year in 2017. Her talk will offer a brief history of the collection, highlighting major holdings and iconic works. The talk will include a conversation on the changing nature of curatorial practice prompted by contemporary artists breaking down medium specific barriers and the current wider reach of the collection that embraces vernacular photography and photojournalism. Thomas will also discuss The Extended Moment: Fifty Years of Collecting Photographs that she curated for the Audain Art Museum as part of Capture’s 2020 Selected Exhibition Program.
