Race in Illinois: An Historical Overview from Southern Counties to Northern Suburbs
At its founding as a state in 1818, Illinois passed its constitution as a free state. But slavery had existed in the region for centuries, and its impact on American approaches to race affected counties in Southern Illinois for decades after incorporation. As Illinois grew as a state, this later affected suburbs outside Chicago, including Wheaton. Join literary historian Dr. Caroline Kisiel (DePaul University) and sociologist Dr. Brian Miller (Wheaton College) for an historical overview of how the complex relationship Illinois has with slavery and race impacted community formation and development.
