Many healthcare management programs are engaged in addressing topics such as health disparities, implicit bias, cultural competence, and social determinants of health. Faculty at UAB are involved in these issues and have been pushing the department toward "Inclusive Excellence in Action." Through these activities has emerged an interest in learning about the desegregation of Birmingham's University Hospital during the Civil Rights Movement. Our panel includes a professor who was intimately involved with the desegregation of University Hospital in the 1960s as well as the UAB Archivist who preserves photographs and artifacts associated with that period. This, and similar stories, can evoke pride in our predecessors and inspire courage in those educators, students, and graduates seeking to achieve a more diverse, equitable, and just healthcare system.
