Planning for Climate Resilience in Healthcare Facilities – Intro to the new BC Guidelines & its Application
This session will overview the new BC Guidelines for Healthcare facilities (LTC and social housing included) that was built on lessons from global projects and will point to examples of projects in BC, including,
 Anticipate and reduce exposure to climate-related hazards;
 Maintain critical operations and essential services in the face of a shock or stress;
 Safeguard the health and well-being of patients and staff;
 Reduce risk of strains, failures, closures, or evacuations;
 Consider cascading impacts between systems or scales; and
 Return to normal operations in a fast and efficient manner following an event.
The learning outcomes:

Following the session, participants will be able to:
• Describe the key climate risks facing health care facilities in BC
• Explain how the Resilience Guidelines guide the planning, procurement and implementation phases of the health facility lifecycle
• Identify how design teams might integrate climate resilience into architectural and engineering components of facility design
