Description: From Saildrones to underwater gliders, autonomous vehicles are becoming more and more sophisticated tools to sample our oceans and understand the rapid changes occurring from our coasts to the high seas. Previously, autonomous vehicles were mostly used to help understand ocean conditions, like temperature, salinity, and currents. However, the latest autonomous vehicle technology allows us to start to study ocean ecosystems, using tools such as acoustics and environmental DNA. Since sending scientists to sea can be very costly, are autonomous vehicles the future of ocean research? We are bringing together a group of experts to discuss the latest developments in autonomous vehicle technology for ocean science to help paint a picture of what the future of marine research could look like with these rapidly evolving tools.
