Student Mental Health Policy Workgroup Virtual Meeting
The Student Mental Health Policy Workgroup (SMHPW) is an all-volunteer work group comprised of members representing various entities that intersect with mental and behavioral health and education in an effort to collaboratively improve related services and supports for school communities. The primary mission of the work group is to assess the mental and behavioral health needs of California kindergarten through grade twelve (K–12) students, families and staff, examine trends, data, resources, funding and lessons learned from others in the state and nation, and gather evidence to shape policy recommendations made to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. These policy recommendations will help build and strengthen capacity among K–12 grade schools, and their partners, to appropriately refer, support, and serve students in a culturally and linguistically appropriate as well as timely manner. The SMHPW also serves as an advisory board for mental health projects administered by the California Department of Education and its partners.
