Engineering Vegetated Roofing Systems to Optimize Stormwater Management
Urban centres have high concentrations of impervious areas which pose a challenge in managing large volumes of stormwater. Heavy rain events or back-to-back storms cause problems like flooding, property damage, and combined overflow sewer discharge. Green infrastructure, such as vegetated roofs, can help mitigate these problems because they restore the hydrologic cycle in urbanized areas. Vegetated roof systems designed for maximum stormwater management decrease the volume of stormwater within the urban core and reliably delay travel time of stormwater to the treatment plant. These retention and detention strategies help alleviate the burden of heavy stormwater on our cities’ infrastructure. REGISTRATION IS LIMITED.

Learning Objectives:

1. The distinction between stormwater retention and detention
2. The importance of detention in urban centres (ie Greater Toronto Area)
3. Existing roof top technologies
4. Using biomimicry to re-engineer vegetated roofing system
5. Collaboration: Landscape Architects, Architects, Civil Engineers

Speakers

Dr. Karen Liu
Green Roof Specialist @Next Level Stormwater Management
Dr. Karen Liu has been conducting green roof research since 2000. Before joining the private sector, Karen was a lead researcher of the green roof programs at the National Research Council and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. She led the research teams to instrument and monitor various green roofs in Ontario and British Columbia to evaluate their water balance and examine their potential in stormwater management. Karen was a key participant in the research consortium that developed the first national wind testing standard for vegetated roofing CSA A123.24. Additionally, Karen has vast practical experience having worked on hundreds of green roof projects across North America, Europe and Asia. Over her career, Karen authored and contributed to dozens of academic and technical articles. In 2015, she received the F. Ross Browne Award.
James Weldon
Technical Sales & Design Consultant @Next Level Stormwater Management
With a background in architecture and engineering, James has worked in the construction industry in a design role for the past 7 years. Prior to working for Next Level Stormwater Management he was an architectural representative for a pre-cast concrete manufacturer and a structural designer for an engineering firm in British Columbia. An increasing interest and passion for sustainable building practices led him to the green roof industry, joining Next Level in 2019. Since then he has been involved in many unique and exciting green roof projects across the country. James offers a detailed and creative approach to designing and implementing green roofs for both retrofits and new construction on projects Canada-wide and looks for meaningful collaboration to find the right solutions for the stormwater challenges that we face.
