The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) is commemorated every year on the 22nd of May, to celebrate biodiversity and promote solutions to issues concerning the loss of it. It is an annual commemoration declared by the United Nations CBD and the theme set for 2021, is ‘We’re Part of the Solution’. The theme serves as a reminder that biodiversity is the answer to several sustainable development challenges. From nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods; biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better, thereby emphasizing hope, solidarity, and the importance of working together at all levels to build a future of life in harmony with nature.
The Embassy of France in Sri Lanka and the Maldives and Dilmah Conservation have been partnering with Biodiversity Sri Lanka in commemorating the IDB. This year, the collaboration proposes to organize a joint programme under the relevant theme that would benefit a wide audience, through the creation of much needed awareness as to how each individual/organization is able to contribute towards practical solutions to today’s biodiversity-related challenges. This year’s programme will be organized as a virtual event, with the contribution of a diverse array of panelists.
