The Constitution: The Synthesis that Created the West
Abraham Lincoln described the United States Constitution as the silver frame around an apple of gold. The silver frame was the separation and division of powers in the Constitution and the apple gold was the Declaration of Independence’s assertion that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.

The Framers of the United States Constitution intended to create a system of ordered liberty, a political framework that balanced powers between institutions so that the inhabitants of the United States might be freed to achieve everything of which they might be capable.

Today, many students concede they do not understand the powers and philosophy of the Constitution and admit they do not know what has allowed the United States to become the beacon of hope, freedom, and opportunity that is its legacy. In this webinar, Dr. Donald Devine will explain the historical and cultural influences that the Framers poured into the Constitution and its ideas of ordered liberty, all with the aim of encouraging students to appreciate this seminal document and the freedoms it safeguards.

About Dr. Devine: Dr. Donald Devine is a columnist, author of ten books, and the Grewcock Senior Scholar for The Fund for American Studies. Devine served as President Ronald Reagan’s civil service director during the president’s first term in office. During that time, The Washington Post labeled him Reagan’s “terrible swift sword of the civil service” for cutting bureaucrats and reducing billions in spending. Today, Devine writes and teaches Constitutional Leadership Seminars to young people and moderates adult forums about reviving the Constitution and saving the historic Western civilizational marriage between freedom and tradition.
