“IMF Growth Forecasting and Debt Sustainability in the MENA region” Webinar

The regional project “Economic Policies for Social Justice in MENA” of the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung (FES) is pleased to invite you to a hybrid conference roundtable on “IMF Growth Forecasting and Debt Sustainability”, taking place in Tunis, Tunisia on 02 March 2023 at 2 p.m Tunis time (UTC+1).
FES published In September 2022 a study called “A decade of rosy forecasts: How IMF debt sustainability analyses underestimated debt risks in the MENA region”, which analysed the IMF’s forecasting practice over the past 10 years in three exemplary countries of the MENA region (Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia). The study shows that over-optimistic baseline scenarios were a regular and intrinsic part of programmes and analyses.
The event aims to present the study and its findings and potential consequences for future reforms. It is also an opportunity to open the discussion with IMF representatives as well as CSOs monitoring IMF programs in their countries and regions. The seminar will be in English and Arabic with simultaneous interpretation into both languages. For registration, please use the link below by February 28th 2023.

يسر فريق المشروع الإقليمي «سياسات اقتصادية لعدالة اجتماعية بمنطقة لشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا بمؤسسة فريدريش ايبرت أن يدعوكم لحضور لقاء يتناول موضوع " توقعات صندوق النقد الدولي للنمو الاقتصادي والقدرة على تحمل الديون في المنطقة" وذلك يوم الخميس 02 مارس 2023 على الساعة الثانية بعد الزوال بتوقيت تونس. نشرت مؤسسة فريدريش ايبرت في سبتمبر الماضي دراسة بعنوان ’ عقد من التوقعات الوردية: كيف قلل صندوق النقد الدولي من تقدير مخاطر الديون في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال افريقيا’ (يمكنكم الاطلاع على دراسة هنا). وتحلل الدراسة ممارسات تقدير وتوقع نسب النمو الاقتصادي الخاصة بصندوق النقد الدولي على مدى السنوات العشر الماضية في ثلاثة بلدان في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال افريقيا وهي الأردن، والمغرب، وتونس وستتم إضافة مصر لاحقا
