RP-ThP Concept in Cranio-Mandibular Orthodontics
VieSID Keynote Webinar by Prof. Sadao Sato

The most important element to consider in the treatment of malocclusion is the
function and dysfunction of the craniomandibular system (CMS). The role of CMS
is to maintain the mandibular position in a physiological position. There is a risk
that the mandibular position is easily displaced in a realigned human maxillofacial
skull. It is the occlusion that most affects the mandibular position. Therefore, it is
always necessary to consider the mandibular position in orthodontic treatment.
Especially in the diagnosis and treatment planning of malocclusion, the guideline
regarding the direction and specific position with respect to the mandibular
position is important. Therefore, RP-ThP concept is the foundation in
craniomandibular Orthodontics.
Orthodontic treatment is an effective means to improve the mandibular position
by controlling the vertical dimension and occlusal plane, improving the shape of
the dental arch, and optimizing occlusal guidance. Orthodontic treatment has
become the most effective treatment option for CMS dysfunction.
