On positionality: working with (and contesting) Italian ‘difficult heritage’
BSR FINE ARTS TALK

Alessandra Ferrini

Alessandra Ferrini’s practice interrogates the enduring legacies of Italian colonialism and Fascism. This presentation focuses on the ongoing project Unsettling Genealogies and the site-specific installation My Heritage? (2020 - Manifesta 13 Marseille Paralléles du Sud). Reflecting on historical responsibility and institutional accountability, it considers different strategies to critically approach ‘difficult heritage’ through art practice.

Developed for the former Casa d’Italia in Marseille, which was inaugurated in 1935 and now houses the Italian Cultural Institute, My Heritage? scrutinises the historical and ideological significance of the building: the intensification of Fascist imperial aspirations that culminated in the fascistization of the Italian diaspora and the establishment of the Empire in 1936 - as a result of the occupation of Ethiopia. Unsettling Genealogies investigates the history of ethnographic displays and of the anthropological discipline in Italy. In its first stage, it questions the planned re-exhibition of the former Colonial Museum at the Museo delle Civiltà, which is located within Rome’s EUR Fascist architectural complex.
