- Lessons from the Water: Diving with a Purpose
- United Shades of America: Black to the Future
Black creatives and storytellers face unique challenges when trying to portray the modern Black experience in film and television. Oftentimes, the Black experience is depicted in pain and trauma. CNN’s United Shades of America “Black to the Future” episode and the CNN film “Lessons from the Water: Diving with a Purpose,” Black innovation, ingenuity and resilience.
In the Black to the Future episode, W. Kamau Bell explores the role race plays in science and technology. The episode also delves into the lack of diversity in technology jobs, encouraging Black people across the globe to explore careers in STEM. In “Lessons from the Water,” divers dive to the depths of the ocean to discover sunken vessels from the trans-Atlantic commerce in African lives. The film highlights the need for Black historians and archeologists to tell the rich and complicated stories of our past and present. Both the film and episode focus on the history, culture, society and community of Black people, in an affirming way that is often not being told elsewhere.
