John Deathridge: "Wagner and Schubert. The Idea of the Lied in Public and Private Life" - "Kirill Gerstein invites" hosted by eislerlab at HfM Eisler Berlin
Prof. John Deathridge:

"With Beethoven 2020 in lockdown it isn’t a bad idea perhaps to raise the question of how composers have expressed the tensions between public and private life in their music. I want to focus on two whose names are not often mentioned in the same breath, but who, both taking their cue from Beethoven, thought hard about the lied and the symphony, about public heroism in the mould of Napoleon and (later) private individualism influenced in part by Byron, and above about the interstices between these musical, literary, social, and not least philosophical spaces."
