The Red, White & Blue Schools program recognizes schools and districts who do an excellent job in civics education. The program provides ideas and resources for teaching civics at every grade level. It is sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of the State, The Connecticut Democracy Center at Connecticut’s Old State House, and the State Department of Education.
Red, White & Blue Schools has a different theme each year. This year's theme is "State and local government and elections".
Join us for a virtual Red, White & Blue Schools kickoff event on Wednesday, September 29 from 4:00pm-6:00pm. After comments by Secretary of State Denise Merrill, Department of Education Commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker, and Sally Whipple, Executive Director of The Connecticut Democracy Center at Connecticut's Old State House, teachers will learn about the format of Red, White and Blue Schools and discuss strategies for teaching state and local government and elections. There will also be a panel presentation, with leaders of city/town governments and elected state legislators discussing getting students involved in state and local issues and why it is important to study government at the local level.
