Description
Globally, nations have lost their traditional food systems due to their dependency on imported foods and diversifying to crops that do not grow naturally in their respective environmental conditions. Many indigenous communities have slowly learned the importance of their natural food systems and the role it plays in health, environment, and culture. The Pacific traditional food systems for example played a crucial role in supporting our communities towards Climate Smart Agriculture. Fiji consists of a wide variety of traditional root crops that are not recognized by most, and we have systems and structures that can be interwoven with various approaches for development. The integration of new technology, such as germplasm, into farming systems can help preserve the diverse range of traditional root crops and their unique characteristics, benefiting Fijian communities. This webinar share insights from Fiji National University’s latest research on how indigenous agricultural (or traditional) knowledge can contribute to achieving Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) in Fijian farming systems, with a particular focus on its relevance to our traditional root crops in Fiji. PHAMA Plus works in the root crop sector across Fiji, Tonga and Samoa, supporting the integration of sustainable traditional farming practices in its partnerships as an approach to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change and limit environmental degradation.
