Topic
Canadian Experience in Intermediate and Deep Subsurface CO2 Monitoring and Storage – assuring public confidence in containment
Description
Join us as Dr. Rick Chalaturnyk and Dr. Don Lawton discuss containment and public assurance monitoring at their two operating carbon dioxide storage sites in Canada. Dr. Chalaturnyk is Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Alberta and is Principal Investigator, GeoREF Foundation CMG Chair in Reservoir Geomechanics. He is on the Scientific and Engineering Research Committee of the PTRC's Aquistore project, which has stored 365,000 tonnes of CO2 from SaskPower's Boundary Dam facility. Dr. Don Lawton is a Professor of Geophysics in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Calgary, and is Director of CMC Research Institute's Containment and Monitoring Institute (CaMI), which has its field research station located near Brooks, Alberta. This webinar will look at CO2 monitoring and containment at both deep (Aquistore -3200m) and intermediate (CaMI 300m) levels.

Hi there, You are invited to a Zoom webinar. When: Apr 14, 2021 09:00 AM Saskatchewan Topic: Canadian Experience in Intermediate and Deep Subsurface CO2 Monitoring and Storage – assuring public confidence in containment Register in advance for this webinar: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_uHDc5lupTFKIBePVUcGv8w After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. ---------- Webinar Speakers Dr. Rick Chalaturnyk (Professor and NSERC/Energi Simulation Industrial Research Chair in Reservoir GeoMechanics @University of Alberta) Richard Chalaturnyk is a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta and holds an NSERC/Energi Simulation Industrial Research Chair in Reservoir Geomechanics. At the University of Alberta, Rick has created the Reservoir Geomechanics Research Group, working primarily in the area of unconventional resource geomechanics, geological storage of CO2 and has established GeoREF, GeoCERF, GeoPRINT and GeoRMT, four unique GeoInnovation Environments. He was involved in the IEA GHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 Storage and Monitoring Research Project since its inception and is currently active as a member of the scientific and engineering research committee for the Aquistore project in Saskatchewan and several other international CCS initiatives. Dr. Chalaturnyk served as Chair of a Canadian Standards Association Technical Committee that developed CSA Z741-12, a standard for the geological storage of CO2. Dr. Don Lawton (Director of the Containment and Monitoring Institute (CaMI), and Professor of Geophysics @CMC and the University of Calgary) Dr. Don Lawton is an expert in seismic monitoring and is the Director of the Containment and Monitoring Institute (CaMI), an applied research entity affiliated with the University of Calgary. He leads a research and commercialization program related to monitoring technologies for verifying the safe storage of CO2 in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. He has be instrumental in creating an industry-supported research program at CaMI’s Field Research Station for CCS implementation. Dr. Lawton is also a Faculty Professor of Geophysics at the University of Calgary and his research interests include acquisition, processing and interpretation of multicomponent seismic data, seismic anisotropy, integrated geophysical and geological studies in complex geological settings, and in advancing monitoring methods for geological storage of CO2. He was awarded the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG) Medal in 2000 and received Honorary Membership in the Society in 2014.
