TACSPA 4 Conference: Religions as Bridgebuilders or Roadblocks in Elections in East Africa and the Horn
Generally, elections have contributed to advance political participation and should ensure the fulfilling of voters’ aspirations and the development of the society at large. However, the political violence experienced in the East and Horn of Africa, and increasingly all over the continent, demonstrates that elections and transition processes afterwards are also a cause of instability and economic setback. Generally, electoral processes cannot be analysed without including the role of Religions, which are omnipresent in the region. Their role is often ambivalent, since Religions and Politics are often intertwined, while on the other side, Religions increasingly advocate for human rights and against autocratic regimes. Hence, discussing the role of Religions as Bridge Builders or Roadblocks from different angles and incorporating views from practitioners and scholars from different fields, will be the core of this conference.
