When the Public Health Emergency for the COVID-19 public health emergency ends, several waivers special allowances for health care coverage will cease and many Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries will be transitioned to regular coverage.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services refer to this as the "Great Unwinding" of the Public Health Emergency. This may be one of the biggest events affecting health care coverage since the Affordable Care Act was enacted.
