Interoceptive Exposure: Overcoming Uncomfortable Sensations to Help Regulate Eating and Emotions
Interoceptive awareness (IA) or the brain’s ability to recognize, label and accept one’s internal emotional states and bodily signals has long been recognized as a contributing issue in EDs. Interoceptive exposure (IE) exercises are designed to provoke the internal sensations that accompany difficult emotional experiences, to promote new learning and increase tolerance of these sensations. In this workshop, we will briefly review research linking deficits in interoceptive awareness and tolerance to eating disorder symptoms and will demonstrate how interoceptive exposure can promote tolerance of physical sensations associated with eating and emotions, thereby reducing forms of avoidance that maintain eating disorders.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Participants will be able to describe two associations between interoceptive awareness and emotional tolerance among individuals with eating disorders.
2. Participants will be able to identify two interoceptive exposure exercises to target uncomfortable physical sensations associated with eating disorders.
3. Participants will be able to list the three areas of progress and response monitoring when conducting interoceptive exposure exercises with individuals with eating disorders.
