Referring a client can be a make or break it experience for your client, the rDVM, and the specialist. When done effectively clients are prepared ahead with realistic expectations and specialists deliver the care the pet needs with improved patient health. In the worst of circumstances, clients wait impatiently for prolonged periods of time, patient’s health deteriorates, and specialists are frustrated due to their inability to care for the patient and help the client. So, as the referring veterinarian your role is critical in fully eliciting the client’s agenda and perspective to ascertain if a referral is appropriate; providing education, so your client knows what to expect; and outlining expectations for client’s time, resources, and support. In this session, you will hear one specialist’s perceptions and learn critical communication skills for making an effective referral. Be prepared to listen and add new communication tools and put them into practice.
