The Politics of Utopia in the Long Nineteenth Century
How did a variety of American utopian anti-capitalisms sprout with, against and around Marxism in both the antebellum era and at the turn of the century? This panel focuses on the communitarian tradition and its outgrowths and intertwinings with anti-capitalist thought. This lens not only allows us to locate new figures for historical study, but to complicate notions of the left as necessarily in tension with the liberal tradition and to place women and queer thinkers alongside Marx at the heart of the American leftist tradition.

Join a diverse group of historians in discussion! Panelists include Ashley Garcia (University of Texas, Austin), Daniel Joslyn (New York University), Brigitte Koenig (Seton Hall University), and Leilah Danielson (Northern Arizona University).
