Prof.  Dennis Hiebert: "Right versus Left, Power versus Presence: The Moral Foundations of Politics"
Beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has suffered a recent plague of political polarization and antipathy that is grounded in contested moralities, is evident in conflicting economies, and is conventionally framed as conservative versus progressive, right versus left ideologies.  Moral foundations theory, formulated from extensive cross-cultural research, identifies the five pillars of morality that the polarities share but do not build upon equally, thereby constructing their opposing differences.  This lecture will outline moral foundations theory, consider implications and applications of research findings based on the theory, and ponder how Christians ought to participate in the public sphere in light of the theory.

Dennis Hiebert, PhD., is a semi-retired professor of sociology at the University of Manitoba in Canada. He is a Past President of the Christian Sociological Association, the author most recently of Rationality, Humility, and Spirituality in Christian Life (2020), the editor of the Journal of Sociology and Christianity, and the editor of the Routledge International Handbook of Sociology and Christianity (forthcoming).
